A major study suggests that the antibiotic Augmentin could help combat infections caused by resistant bacteria.
In an analysis of more than 300 patients with pneumonia who had been treated with Augmentin for a year, researchers found that the drug caused an increase in the number of bacteria resistant to amoxicillin, the standard antibiotic of Augmentin, and other antibiotics, including amoxicillin.
“These results are a sign that antibiotics are not the only cause of resistance,” said senior study leader Dr. Steven Nissen, a clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
“If this study is the first to find this drug to treat a pneumonia infection, it may be the beginning of a new era of antibiotics.”
The findings come from a separate analysis of the study, which included more than 300 people with respiratory tract infections.
The investigators found that patients in the study had a higher number of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and that the drug had little or no effect on the bacteria causing the infection. Patients who took the drug had a lower rate of pneumonia and were younger, healthier, and had a lower incidence of serious side effects.
“The study suggests that antibiotics are not the only cause of resistance in the community,” Nissen said.
In the study, the researchers used a combination of Augmentin and a beta-lactam antibiotic, amoxicillin, which is an antibiotic used in both hospital- and outpatient-based therapy. Patients treated with Augmentin were significantly less likely to be prescribed amoxicillin than those who were not treated with amoxicillin.
However, the researchers found that amoxicillin also was not the most effective antibiotic against bacterial infection, which makes the study even more concerning. It is the only antibiotic that is effective against resistant infections.
The researchers also found that Augmentin reduced the risk of developing pneumonia in patients by an average of two percent.
The study also found that, although the antibiotics were not as effective against viral infections as Augmentin was, the patients receiving Augmentin had higher rates of pneumonia, including pneumonia related to cold sores or flu.
In a separate analysis of the same study, researchers also found that Augmentin reduced the risk of developing pneumonia in patients by an average of a whopping five percent, an increase of eight percent, and a decrease of only one percent.
The researchers said Augmentin’s effectiveness against a wide range of bacterial infections, including pneumonia and sinusitis, was similar to that of the antibiotic Amoxicillin, which is the penicillin group’s mainstay of therapy.
Dr. Daniel Wong, a research fellow at Harvard, said that the researchers’ findings “show that Augmentin is not just effective against resistant bacteria. It’s also an effective antibiotic that treats both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, and is also effective against both types of bacteria.”
The researchers also found that Augmentin was not as effective against viral infections as Amoxicillin, which is the penicillin group’s mainstay of therapy.
Augmentin is not used in the treatment of viral infections like the flu, pneumonia, or pneumonia. It may also be used in combination with other antibiotics to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including the ear and sinusitis, and for sinus infections, sinusitis associated with pneumonia.
The study did not find a significant difference in the incidence of death among patients treated with Augmentin versus those treated with amoxicillin.
“The study does show that the antibiotic Augmentin may not be the best choice for treating a wide range of bacterial infections,” Nissen said. “While it may be used in the treatment of viral infections, it does not seem to be useful in treating a sinusitis-associated pneumonia.
“Overall, the results of this study show that the benefits of Augmentin for the treatment of respiratory tract infections should be weighed against the risks associated with its use.”
Scott Palfrey, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, said that while the study was promising, the findings may not be representative of the entire antibiotic class.“This study is a good example of why we need to use the data as a guideline to make the decision about where to go forward,” Palfrey said.
“If the researchers find that the antibiotic Augmentin does not help patients with pneumonia, we should continue to try and do more in the future to find a better alternative.
